The eponymous seven-year-old Sarah and her friendly mallard Duck live together in the apparent absence of any responsible carer but nonetheless safely meet plenty of other characters in their gentle but entertaining adventures, thumbing a nose at typical cliché in children’s programming. Some of those characters animate and even human, others not so, but mostly bestowed with the gift of talking nonetheless – a sarcastic bag is a particular delight, reminding me a lot of Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle. Astronomical purists will raise a particular eyebrow at the behaviour of the Moon and his other celestial friends, as they talk with Sarah even inside a department store for instance, but this show really is altogether harmless fun and the quirky animation style should be enjoyed by all, young and old. — David
