Alexander Armstrong is the new darling of voiceover. Here, he's in his element as the narrator of a series of fortunate events: a gang of would-be cubs, all earning merits under the watchful eye of a large dog. The animation is purposely functional rather than lavish, allowing plenty of room for the frankly exemplary writing (the show is awash with parody and pastiche – the Care Bears, 70s cop shows and Monty Python all get nods). Armstrong is clearly having a ball, while Duggee himself only speaks in barks and yowls, and is all the more endearing because of it. Episodes conclude when the Squirrels are reunited with their parents (curiously, the crocodile appears to be adopted) and the words "We've got our first aid / puppet show / caterpillar badges!", to which the only logical response is "Oh great. More sewing." — James
