Grandpa in My Pocket

Only Jason Mason knows that his eponymous grandpa (played by James Bolam) has a shrinking cap that allows him to get up to all kinds of predictable mischief winding up obnoxious visitors and so on, mostly centred on pretending to be talking toys. Other members of the family sometimes come close to discovering the truth about Grandpa’s naps, but the secret remains secure – at least until cousins Josh and Elsie take over his mantle for the later series. We never get to meet Josh and Elsie’s parents, so their curious ethnic mix remains an unspoken-of enigma and/or PC nod. For some reason, quite a few B-list luvvies have happily got involved with the show, which mostly otherwise seems to be a vehicle for stage school brats to get on the acting ladder, and for Mister Maker (a.k.a. Phil Gallagher) to prove he’s as bad at acting as he is at arts and craft. — David
