Charlie and Lola

“I have this little sister Lola...” So starts each episode, echoing the style of Lauren Child’s original and perennially popular story books. Charlie and this funny little sister exist in a typical bubble world, where friends are few and their parents are only occasionally alluded to and certainly never seen. Charlie tries to be the voice of wisdom and grounding to counter Lola’s increasingly adventurous flights of fancy as she explores the world of a tiny tot. Although each story endeavours to convey a moral message, it’s never preachy and usually fun, and although Child was once criticised for trying to write for children when she had none of her own (she has since adopted, and like most of us was an infant herself once, so does have a bit of an inside scoop) the insight into childhood that she imparts is unquestionable. — David
